I see where you are coming from on this and it really depends on the situation, If you are a younger guy like high school or college I actually think facebooking or myspacing early is more beneficial since it is a lot less pressure than actually getting a phone number. You also have to be sure to mention that you are going to facebook her or even better get her to facebook you like it was her idea. "So are you on facebook or myspace or anything?" "Oh no! you will probably facebook me now and send me like 10 messages a day!" Then when she giggles and disagrees say alright I guess you can facebook me I will be expecting a friend in vite and I might actually approve it. something to that effect...

If you are older yes phone may be a better option especially since less people as you move up in age will actually have an online account. They will also be more comfortable with telephone use anyway. To be honest though I really don't consider anytime to be too soon if you set your profile up right. They can check out all the attractive qualities about you and it should build a mental image of who you are in their head (hopefully an awesome one.) Now while the phone is more intimate, some guys especially the ones that aren't quick thinking on their feet or a smooth talker the profile I would definitely say is a better option.

Good tips. As a guy, when I meet a woman offline (which nearly all of them) I make a point never to facebook them too soon. The reasoning is that its too much exposure too soon, and in a medium thats inferior to talking on the phone or in person. Plus you just become another random dude who facebooked them.
